Abstract

The topic of the Puellae Gaditanae is reconsidered in this paper in a new light. Other scholars have studied its literary tradition under «nationalistic» and folkloric points of view, including sometimes in its treatment moral considerations. We propase to see in this topic the survival in Roman times of an old institution -the hetaireia- probably dealing in its origin with the cult of a goddess, such as the Phoenician Astarte. Finally we suggest an iconographical approach to the subject with a reference to the bronze thymiaterion from La Quéjola (Albacete), a local product of archaic times.
