Urban soil management in the Phoenician-Punic Carthage

The Phoenician-Punic societies were usually represented through, among other features, their urban planning. Carthage was taken as archetype of the Punic city. From orientalism and classicism assumptions its urban form was interpreted as less rational compared with the display of Greek and Roman colonies. Nevertheless, an analysis of the stratigraphical sequence recorded in Carthage allows us to identify urban soil uses. Their topographical and chronological location shows that an accurate management of urban soil uses and growth was applied in Carthage since the archaic period, as well as an urban waste management, till its destruction in 146 B.C.
