Abstract

Since the Renaissance, the Tiber River has been the object of the most unusual archaeological quests, driven mainly by fantastic medieval lore. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the excavations on the river intensified and were epitomized by the scientific atmosphere of the Enlightenment, even tough they resulted in little archaeological worth. In 1819, even the Spanish monarch Fernando VII almost became a Shareholder in one of these archaeological companies. After the Italian unification, many finds were discovered in the works done along the Tiber's urban region, of wich many are now in the Museo Nazionale Romano.
