Abstract

The dextrarum iunctio –the joining of two right hands– was a recurrent symbol in Roman material culture, depicted across a wide range of media, including coins, jewelry, architecture, and funerary monuments. Notably, women and the feminine sphere were frequently associated with this iconographic motif. By incorporating a gender perspective, this study examines the ideology of peace and concord that linked women to the dextrarum iunctio. Through the analysis of various artifacts produced from the late Republic to the 3rd century CE, which illustrate the connection between the dextrarum iunctio and the mundus muliebris, this research offers new insights into the significance of this symbol, contributing to the study of women’s history, gender dynamics, emotions, and everyday life in ancient Roman society
