Abstract

Landscape Archeology is hardly thirty years old, and the birth of a real interest in landscape as an object of study in this science occurred little more than fifteen years ago; even so, practically all the trends that have shaped the evolution of archeology in the last century are present in its gestation. Its acceptance has been held back by prejudices born out of reticence and scepticism, as well as by the problems of its lack of definition and still not very sol id objectives and methods. The recent beginning, however, of a review of its theoretical and methodological foundations and of research projects in this direction will provide a profile of its most characteristics features, perspectives and work methods. Lastly, the development of landscape archeology and the interest it creates in different fields is closely linked to the new social conditions and demands coming from the complex problems of planning and management of space, which require a drawing together of the increasingly disassociated scientific and social spheres.
