Abstract

The Roman and Spanish coins found by Schulten at the beginning of the twentieth century in his excavations of the Roman camps and forts associated with the siegeworks around Numantia and on the Gran Atalaya hill at Renieblas have received varied interest. This article discusses a small collection of unpublished coins from a variety of contexts, which add to those found by Schulten. Past studies of the coinage from Numantia, especially the work of Hildebrandt, are reviewed, and their methodologies and results questioned. The material found particularly in Lager V at Renieblas is also analysed, resulting in clarification of the problematical dating of this camp.
