The nature and purpose of pitch is examined on the basis of a sample taken from the inner wall of an early imperial fish-sauce amphora. The study seeks to identify the source of the pitch and its precise composition. Questions concerning the product's manufacture and its commercial applications are considered as part of a discussion of its contribution to the Roman economy.
